Course Duration
  • Four year (2 semesters in a year)
  • For qualifying the Degree, one has to undergo 8x semesters with minimum 136 credits.

 NUST Policies - Under Graduate Courses
Semester system of examination is followed.
  • Duration of semester is 18 weeks
  • End semester exam is held in 18th week

  • Following the relative grading system, students are awarded grade as A, B+, B, C+, C, D and F.

  • Basing on these grades results are finalized with following status: -

     

          "Promoted, promoted with warning, promoted on probation, relegated and withdrawn"  

     

  • Students with other than promoted status are academically deficient. Deficiencies are due earning of "F" Grade(s), low sem GPA and/or low Cum GPA.


Warning
Definition. - "Warning" means a written cautionary statement issued to a student who qualifies to continue his studies despite minor deficiencies in some course so as to make him conscious of the weakness and advise him to work hard during the semester under progress.
Policy. - Students are placed on warning under any of the following conditions :-
  • First Sem GPA is equal to or more than 1.90 but less than 2.00 and the student has not obtained 'F' grade in any subject ; or
  • Second semester onwards, Sem GPA is equal to or more than 1.90 but less than 2.0 without any 'F' grade, provided the Cum GPA is more than or equal to 2.00 and the student does not qualify for probation, relegation, withdrawal.
Probation
Definition. - A student is said to be on "Probation" if he/she is deficient in academic standards to the extent that he/she is likely to be relegated/withdraw and is allowed to continue studies for one semester.
Policy. - A student is placed on probation under any of the following conditions if :-
  • First Sem GPA is equal to or more than 1.5 but less than 1.9 without any 'F' grade; or
  • Cum GPA at the end of second semester is equal to or more than 1.50 but less than 2.00 and he/she does not qualify for relegation/withdrawal; or
  • Third semester onwards, Cum GPA is less than 2.00; or
  • He/She receives 'F' grade(s) and does not qualify for relegation/withdrawal.
Compulsion. - While on probation, a student shall :-
  • Contact concerned faculty for guidance; and
  • Keep a complete record of the semester work comprising home assignments, laboratory reports, quizzes, mid semester/midterm test, and the mark obtained
Relegation
Definition. - "Relegation" means that the student is asked to join the next junior class.
Policy. - Faculty Board of studies shall recommended and qualify a relegation as under :-
  • Relegation on academic grounds;
  • Relegation on medical grounds;
  • Relegation on disciplinary grounds; or
  • Relegation on prolonged absence.
A student is relegated, subject to any one of the conditions listed below: -
  • If the first Sem GPA is between 1.00 and 1.50;

  • If the student's Cum GPA consistently remains below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters;

  • If the student has a total of 4 un-cleared 'F' grades at any particular time during the course of studies provided he/she does not earn the same in a single semester;

  • If the student fails in 3 courses in any one semester;

  • If the student fails in repeat/retest of a failed course;

  • If the student fails to appear and clear the 'F' grades as decided by the Faculty Board of Studies without valid reasons;

  • On disciplinary grounds when recommended by respective Discipline Committee of college/institute/centre and Discipline Committee of NUST;

  • If overall attendance of the student in the college/institute/centre is below 75% in a semester on medical grounds or reasons beyond his control - (technical relegation)*; or

  • If the student remains absent for more than 30 but less than 45 consecutive days without valid reasons@;

 

If relegation is due to student's CGPA consistently remains below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters, then the student may be
required to repeat both the semesters as decided by the college FBS, otherwise he/she will repeat the previous semester only.

 

In case of relegation on medical grounds or reasons beyond student’s control as mentioned above*, on authorized grounds/
sanctioned leave from competent authority, it will be termed as a “Technical Relegation” and will not involve penalties
associated with normal relegation.

Suspension cum relegation due to prolonged absence. - A student shall be suspended and relegated if he/she
remains absent for more than 30 but less than 45 consecutive days with out valid reasons@. The student shall be required to
pay 10% of tuition fee during the period of suspension. Suspension of a student means that he shall not be allowed to attend
the classes i.e. remaining portion of the semester after he reports back from prolonged absence.
Withdrawal
Definition. - “Withdrawal” means that a student is considered unsuitable for further studies at NUST and is withdrawn
from the program.
Policy. - A student is withdrawn subject to any of the conditions listed below:-
  • If the student has been previously relegated (not technical relegation) and earns another relegation.

  • If the student fails in 4 courses in any one semester.

  • If the student secures a minimum Sem GPA of 1.00 or less in the first semester.

  • If the student secures a Cum GPA of 1.5 or less at end of first two semesters.

  • On disciplinary grounds when recommended by respective Discipline Committee of college/institute/centre and Discipline Committee of NUST: or

  • If the student remains absent for 45 or more consecutive days without valid reasons.

 

Retest/repetition of courses. - In order to ensure that a student clears all prescribed courses and obtains a minimum
Cum GPA of 2.0 which is a mandatory requirement to earn a NUST degree, retest/ repetition of courses is permitted as per the
following rules:-

Retest of End Semester Examination. -

  • In case a failed subject is a pre requisite for a course in the following semester, the student shall have to clear
    through retest with in 1st six academic weeks of the next semester;
  • Such retest shall have the same weightage as that of actual End Semester Examination in that subject;
  • Maximum achievable grade in this case is ‘D’;
  • There shall be no extra coaching classes prior to such retest;

Repetition of course (s) - A student may repeat a course under two circumstances i.e to clear an ‘F’ Grade or to
improve his Cum GPA. The student shall be required to complete all formalities applicable to repetition of course i.e mid
semester examination/one hour tests, projects, assignments, quizzes etc, and End Semester Examination. The student
transcript shall show both old grade and new earned grade but the Cum GPA shall be based on new earned grade. The
student shall also have to pay the prescribed tuition fee for the repeated course. Maximum achievable grade in this case is
‘B’. Student who repeats a subject shall not be eligible for top student honors/awards even if he improves it and comes in
that bracket after repeating it. It is the student’s responsibility to clear he failed subjects within the prescribed time limits
to avoid relegation due to accumulation of ‘F’ grades. The details of the circumstances under which a student may repeat
a course are:-

  • Clearance of ‘F’ Grade.
  • For a failed course which is not a prerequisite for a subsequent course in the following semester, Faculty Board
    of Studies may decide for a repletion of the course subject to availability of necessary recourses and/Faculty.
  • In case “F” grade is awarded due to short fall in the attendance (less than 75% attendance) in a specific
    subject which is also a pre-requisite for a course in subject to availability of necessary recourses/faculty.
  • The minimum duration of a specially arranged repeat course shall not be less than eight weeks.
  • Improvement of Cum GPA. - A Student may repeat the course in which he received the grade ‘D’ in order to
    improve his Cum GPA. Procedure for repeating for repeating a course shall be as under:-
  • The candidate shall apply to the HoD for permission to repeat a course. The case shall be presented before the
    Faculty Board of Studies which may permit a student to repeat a course whenever offered subject to the
    availability of necessary resources/faculty;
  • The student while repeating the course shall have to undergo all tests, quizzes, sectionals and final exam; and
  • A Student shall be allowed to repeat maximum of five courses during his entire program apart from clearance
    of ‘F’ grade through repetition, if any.
Temporary suspension.
Temporary suspension up to one year from course work is allowed to students facing acute domestic problems/valid
reasons subject to approval of HQ NUST on the positive recommendations of college Faculty Board of Studies. All rules
pertaining to technical relegation shall be applied. During suspension period the student shall be required to pay 10% to tuition
fee for each suspended semester to continue his registration with NUST. In case the student uses the institutional facilities
(such as library, laboratories, help from faculty etc) of the college he/she shall be required to pay 50% of tuition fee during the
suspended period.

 NUST Policies - Post Graduate Courses

Award of Degree
  • Have completed minimum of  30 credits hours.

  • Have achieved a minimum of cum GPA of 3.00/4.00 in course work with a minimum of ‘B’ grade in thesis (6 credit
    hours).

Academic Deficiencies

Probation. - A Student shall be placed on probation at the end of 1st/2nd academic semesters if his Cum GPA is less than
3.00 but equal to or greater than 2.00.

Withdrawal. - A student shall be dropped from the Master's Degree program if :-

  • 1st academic semester GPA is less than 2.00;

  • Receives ‘F’ grade in more than one course or fails again after repeating the course;

  • Cum GPA remains below 3.00 after completion of his/her course work even after availing the chance for improvement of
    grade through repetition, allowed under the provision of NUST regulation;

  • The student remains absent for 30 or more consecutive days without valid reasons;

  • Attendance of the student remains below 75% in two or more subjects (‘F’ grade shall be awarded in the subjects in
    which student’s attendance is below 75%); and

  • On disciplinary grounds when recommended by respective Discipline Committee of college/institute/centre and
    Discipline Committee of NUST.

Repetition of Course

A Student may repeat a course under two circumstances i.e. to clear an ‘F’ Grade or to improve his Cum GPA. The student
shall be required to complete all formalities applicable to repetition of a course i.e. mid semester examination, project,
assignments, quizzes etc and End Semester Examination. The student transcript shall show both the old and new earned grades
but the Cum GPA shall be based on new earned grade. The student shall have to pay the prescribed tuition fee for the repeated
course. Maximum achievable grade in this case is ‘B+’. A student who repeats a course shall not be eligible for top student
honors/awards even if he improves it and comes in that bracket after repeating. The two circumstances under which a student
may repeat a course are:-

Clearance of ‘F’ Grade. - If a student receives an ‘F’ grade in a course, he shall be required to repeat that course,
whenever offered. In case of a subject in which a student has failed is a pre-requisite for a course in the next semester, the
student shall have to clear it by repeating within first 10 academic weeks of the next semester. Maximum duration of a
specially arranged repeat course shall not be less than eight weeks.

Improvement of Cum GPA. - If the Cum GPA of a student is less than 3.00 at the end of the course work he/she may
repeat the course work only in that subject in which he/she received the grade point of less than 3.00 but greater than or
equal to 2.00 in order to improve his/her cum GPA. Procedure for repeating a course shall be as under:-

  • The student shall be permitted to repeat a course by Faculty Board of Studies subject to its offering and availability of
    necessary recourses;
  • The student shall have to repeat the course within the time limit given by Faculty Board of Studies; and
  • A student shall allow to repeat a maximum of 2 courses during his/her entire course work apart from clearance of ‘F’
    grade, if any.
Temporary suspension.
